Any rivalry between Borussia Dortmund and SV Darmstadt 98 is new, considering how the latter has always been a lower-league club, with occasional forays into the Bundesliga.
Since the inception of the Bundesliga in 1962, Borussia Dortmund has been a steadfast contender in the domestic league. The club secured its place in the inaugural league by triumphing in the pre-Bundesliga championship.
This marked the beginning of a successful era for Dortmund, as they clinched their first DFB-Pokal in 1965. A year later, they etched their name in the annals of European football by defeating Liverpool in the extra time of the European Cup Winners’ Cup.
Despite being overshadowed by Bayern Munich recently, Borussia Dortmund's legacy remains strong. The club, crowned German champions eight times, made history in 2000 by becoming the first to offer its stocks to the public. This move allowed fans to become shareholders, have a say in the club's decisions, and set a precedent for other clubs, paving the way for a more democratic and transparent football industry in Germany.
Though marked with ups and downs, SV Darmstadt's Bundesliga journey is a testament to their resilience. It began in 1978 but was a short-lived experience as they were relegated to the second division in the same season.
They made a comeback in 1982, only to face a similar fate. The club then endured a 33-year hiatus from the top flight, returning to the Bundesliga in 2015. After two more seasons, they were relegated again, and their next return is slated for 2023.
Due to the rarity of Darmstadt’s appearances in the top flight, both clubs have only played five games in the Bundesliga. Darmstadt has only won once against BVB in the 16/17 season when they recorded a 2-1 win over the Black and Yellow.
Borussia Dortmund won 3-0 in January 2024 for the first leg of their two-legged league fixture against SV Darmstadt. All eyes are on both teams as they look to improve their chances of killing each other off in the league later this season.
