Aston Villa vs Manchester United tickets for the Premier League 2024/2025 season are on sale on Visitfootball.
Aston Villa is one of the oldest clubs in English football, having been founded in 1874, four years before Manchester United. As two of the three founding members of both the football league and the Premier League, the clash between Aston Villa and Manchester United is one of the fiercest in England.
Both teams enjoyed relatively successful periods in English football in the 1970s. Aston Villa held the record for the most successful team in England from the 1890s until the 1970s, thanks to six FA Cup titles and six league championships.
The Red Devils have since usurped the Villans, becoming the joint-most successful team in England with 20 league titles, the most of any English club. United have been the most successful team in England since the inception of the Premier League, winning 13 of them, including two UEFA Champions League titles and several FA Cup and League Cup titles.
Both teams have treated football fans to several memorable clashes over the years, particularly the 2012/13 season. This was Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge of Manchester United, and many will forever remember Wayne Rooney’s pass to Robin van Persie to score one of the best goals that season. That goal sealed United’s fate as league champions, finishing ahead of City with 11 points.

The Villans have lost their last four matches against Manchester United, including both legs of last season’s Premier League meeting. However, they will be looking to improve that record in their first meeting of the season when they face off in October.
This is also a high-scoring clash, with five of their last six meetings having three goals or more, with the exception of a 1-0 victory for the Red Devils in April 2023. United came from two goals down in December 2023 to secure a 3-2 win over Villa in their first meeting last season.
Villa took the lead in the 22nd minute through John McGinn to compound United’s poor run of form. Leander Dendoncker added more salt to the injury in the 26th minute to extend Aston Villa’s lead. Unai Emery’s men continued to dominate the game and ended the first half with their two-goal lead intact.
United started the second half on the front foot and thought they had reduced the deficit when Alejandro Garnacho scored from close range. However, a VAR check ruled out the goal, leaving United chasing the game again. The goal finally came in the 59th minute, and 12 minutes later, Alejandro Garnacho completed his brace to put the game on level terms.
With eight minutes of regular time to go, summer signing Rasmus Hojlund scored his first Premier League goal from close range to hand United a 3-2 lead. The Red Devils held on to the win to end a poor domestic run.
Aston Villa and Manchester United share a rich history as two of the most successful football clubs in England. Aston Villa had a successful spell in the earlier years, picking up several trophies and becoming the most successful English club during this spell. Villa also holds the record for the most goals scored in the championship in one season, with 128 goals in the 1930/1931 season, a record no other team has managed to break.
Villa has spent 110 seasons in the top flight, ranking them second among the clubs with the longest tenures in English football. In 1982, Villa won the European Cup, beating Bayern Munich in the final to become one of the few English teams to win the competition at the time.
Despite the early successes, Villa’s fortunes have changed in recent seasons, with financial ruins sending the club to relegation for a few years. The club quickly started focusing on developing youngsters, one of whom was Jack Grealish. Villa gained promotion back to the top flight in 2019, going through a series of managerial changes before eventually finding more rhythm under Unai Emery.
The club will be playing Champions League football for the first time since the 82/83 season.
On the other hand, Manchester United’s most successful spell came under Sir Alex Ferguson, who won 13 Premier League titles before his retirement in 2013. The club has gone through several managers since then, including two UCL winners, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, and other known names like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, David Moyes, and most recently Erik Ten Hag.

As two of the oldest clubs in England, Aston Villa and Manchester United have been battling it out for a long time. The pair first had an encounter in 1892, which resulted in a 2-0 win for Manchester United, known as Newton Heath at the time. Aston Villa then secured three consecutive wins over their Manchester rival between March 1893 and February 1894, including a strong 5-1 win in the League Division One.
The next time both teams played against each other was in February 1906 in an FA Cup tie, in which Manchester United won 5-1. This scoreline was a repeat of their last one, only this time, the tide turned in United’s favor.
The teams continued competing at the highest level in several competitions, such as League Division One, the FA Cup, and the FA Charity Shield. Over the years, the Red Devils suffered big defeats to Aston Villa. In February 1910, United lost 7-1 to Villa in a League Division One match.
Two years later, United lost again by a significant margin of 6-0 to Villa. Another 6-0 win followed this in March 1914. The biggest one came in December 1930, when United conceded seven goals to Villa without putting up a fight.
Aston Villa began their reign in this rivalry in the new Premier League era with a 1-0 win. Villa managed to finish the season without losing a match against Manchester United after drawing 1-1 in the second leg of the game.
Manchester United went on a 24-game unbeaten run against Aston Villa, stretching from October 1999 to December 2009. This included a 14-game winning streak in all competitions, the longest run United had over any other opponent at the time.
The Red Devils are also unbeaten in their last four games against Villa, winning all four in all competitions.
The most memorable game in the rivalry in recent years was the 3-0 win for Manchester United in 2013. United went into the game needing all three points to claim the Premier League title, and they did it in style, as Robin van Persie’s first-half hat-trick was enough to maintain the magic in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season.

Aston Villa was the most successful club in England up until the 1970s. During this time, Villa racked up six league titles, six FA Cups, and one European Cup, putting England on the global football radar. Villa won its first league championship in the 1893/94 season. This proved to be the first of many, as the club won four more league titles before 1900.
The club kept the momentum going, finishing runners-up in 1889, 1903, 1908, 1911, 1913, and 1914. Villa also had FA Cup success in the earlier years, winning the trophy in 1887, 1895, 1897, 1905, 1913, and 1920. After a long drought without trophies, the club returned to winning ways and won the championship again in 1930 and 1933.
Altogether, Aston Villa boasts seven First Division titles, two Second Division titles, seven FA Cups, five League Cups, one FA Charity Shield, one European (UCL) title, one European Super Cup, and one Intertoto Cup.
Sadly, despite the early success, Villa has been unable to repeat the feat in recent years. The last time Aston Villa won a domestic title was in 1996, when they lifted the League Cup after beating Leeds United 3-0, courtesy of goals from Savo Milosevic, Ian Taylor, and Dwight Yorke.
The club later tasted more European success in 2001 after winning the Intertoto Cup alongside French clubs PSG and Troyes. Villa also came close to silverware in 2015 when they reached the FA Cup final. However, Arsenal ruined their hopes, beating their fellow London club 4-0, thanks to goals from Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez, Per Mertesacker, and Olivier Giroud.
Below is a comprehensive list of Aston Villa’s trophies:
Like Aston Villa, Manchester United had a peak period as a football club, which lasted from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. The Red Devils are the most successful club in English football, with 68 trophies, more than any other club in the country. Only Liverpool has managed to match that feat.
Again, like Villa, United enjoyed success in the earlier years. The club won its first trophy in 1886, became a league championship winner in 1908, and won its first FA Cup title a year later.
No other English team has won more top-flight titles than Manchester United. The Red Devils have 20 league titles in their trophy cabinet, including 13 out of 32 in the Premier League era. The club had a successful run under Sir Alex Ferguson, who delivered 38 trophies at Old Trafford. This includes five FA Cups, two UEFA Champions League (1999 and 2008), four League Cups, and 10 FA Community Shield trophies.
United became the first English team to win a treble in 1999 when they won the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League after beating Bayern Munich in the final despite being in a losing position until the last five minutes. Although the trophies have dried up since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, the club has still managed to pick up two FA Cup trophies, one FA Community Shield, one Europa League title, and two League Cups.
