Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC may not seem like an ideal rivalry due to the former’s dominance in the Premier League for the past two decades. However, Wolves is City’s closest opposition in terms of matches won against the Manchester club.
They’ve played 129 matches, with Wolves winning 50. Manchester City has won 54 matches, while 25 have ended in a draw. This is the highest head-to-head in the Premier League for Manchester City. The intensity of this rivalry has often influenced the performance of both teams, leading to some of the most memorable matches in the history of the Premier League.
This intense rivalry, which has spanned over a century, had its roots in the 1899 season, a season that saw both teams evenly matched. Both of their games that season ended in a draw, setting the stage for a series of thrilling encounters. City recorded its first win over Wolves in 1900, a 3-2 victory for the Blues. However, Wolves bounced back in the next game, triumphing by a 1-0 scoreline.
Man City then recorded its longest streak over any English opposition when it dominated Wolverhampton Wanderers from 1902 to 1909, winning all eight games they played. Some of these wins had big scorelines, like 6-1, 5-1, 4-0, 4-1, and 6-0.
In 1955, Wolves returned the favor by going undefeated against Manchester City in 16 games. The Wanderers won 12 of those games, drawing the remaining four. This winless run is a significant chapter in Manchester City’s rich history, marking the longest period without a victory against any English club.
Their rivalry in the new Premier League era kickstarted with a win for Wolves in October 2003. They drew the second leg in a high-profile 3-3 clash. In recent years, Manchester City has had the upper hand. The Blues have won 14 of the 22 games they’ve played in all competitions since 2003. Wolverhampton Wanderers has managed just six victories.
City has also been the most successful of both teams, winning seven Premier League titles since 2011, making the club the most successful English club in the past two decades.
Dave Wagstaffe, Steve Daley, Mark Kennedy, Robert Taylor, Joleon Lescott, Mikkel Bischoff, Stephen Elliott, Carlo Nash, Keith Curle, and recently Matheus Nunes have all played for both clubs, leaving their mark on this historic rivalry. Their contributions have added a personal touch to the history of Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
