Wolverhampton Wanderers is one of the oldest clubs in English football. It was one of the founding members of the Football League alongside eleven other clubs, with Liverpool later joining a year after it was founded in 1892. Their rivalry finally kickstarted in 1894 when they met for the first time in the League Division One.
The Liverpool v Wolverhampton Wanderers rivalry started with a bang, with Wolves claiming a 3-1 victory in their first encounter. The second match, a 3-3 draw, further underlined the competitive spirit of this fixture and the promise of thrilling, high-scoring games.
In 1987, Liverpool FC recorded three successive wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers until later that year when they finally lost 2-1 at Molineux.
Goals have always been a feature of matches between these two. In the early 90s, they averaged at least two goals per game, including two consecutive 4-1 home wins for Liverpool and a 4-2 win for Wolves in December 1903.
Wolves’ relegation to the lower tiers of English football meant their rivalry with Liverpool would be on hold until they returned to the league in 1923 with another 2-0 loss to the Reds. Wolves suffered another setback that season as they got relegated and didn’t return to top-flight football until 1932.
The advent of the Premier League in 1992 marked a challenging period for Wolves, who found themselves in the lower tiers. It wasn't until 2004 that they made their Premier League debut, with their first game ending in a 1-1 draw and Liverpool winning the second leg 1-0.
However, Wolves have been a regular feature in the Premier League since 2017, when they returned for the first time since 2012. From 2019 to 2022, Liverpool ran seven consecutive wins over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the league. Wolves’ only win over Liverpool in four years came in a Premier League fixture in February 2023 when they recorded a shocking 3-0 win over Jurgen Klopp’s team, as the Reds failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League that season.
Liverpool maintains a solid record against Wolverhampton Wanderers, winning 60 of their 115 matches together. Wolves have won 37 games, including just one in their last appearances against the Reds.
Despite playing in the Europa League this season, Liverpool is in contention for the Premier League title, with a three-horse race going on between the Reds, Arsenal, and Manchester City in 2024.
