The rivalry between Liverpool FC and Tottenham, two of the Premier League's powerhouses, was ignited in 1909. This historic year saw Tottenham claim a 1-0 victory over the Reds in the League Division One, a match that would set the stage for their future battles.
Spurs proved to be the strongest team then, and despite losing the next game to Liverpool 2-1, they went on to record four wins in a row against Liverpool.
1912 Liverpool broke Tottenham's winning streak with a 4-1 victory. Another significant win followed this in 1914, when the Reds triumphed over Tottenham with a 7-2 scoreline, setting the tone for their future encounters.
Both teams did not clash in the league until 1968 when they met in the FA Cup for the first time. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but Liverpool won the replay a few days later, 2-1. They played in domestic competitions until April 1973, when they met in the UEFA Cup. Liverpool lost the first leg 2-1 before returning in the second leg to win 3-2, thus qualifying by the away goal rule.
Tottenham Hotspur kickstarted the new English Premier League era against the Reds with a 2-0 win. However, Liverpool beat the North London club 6-2 in the reverse leg in 1993.
The pinnacle of their rivalry was reached in 2019 when Liverpool emerged victorious in the UEFA Champions League final against Tottenham with a 2-0 scoreline. This marked Liverpool's first UCL trophy since 2005, a momentous occasion in their rich history.
While Liverpool has enjoyed success recently, the same can’t be said about Spurs. The last time they won anything was in 2008 when they beat Chelsea in the League Cup final 2-1. The North London club beat Blackpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal on their way to the final.
Despite the lack of success in terms of winning trophies, Tottenham has experienced massive commercial success. In 2019, the club moved into the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which happens to be one of the best stadiums in England at the moment.
This upcoming match promises to be exciting, meaning more to Liverpool, as they hope to record a win to keep their Premier League title hopes alive. They’ve played 182 games in total. Liverpool has a superior record of 89 wins. Tottenham won 49 games, while 44 games ended in a draw.
Liverpool is playing in the Europa League this season, while Tottenham missed out on European football altogether due to their eighth-place finish last season. Tottenham is hoping for a return to Champions League football in 2024 under Antonio Conte's permanent successor, Ange Postecoglou.
