After the merger, the club officially joined the third division of Spanish football and did the unthinkable. Despite the odds of being relegated to the non-league tournaments, Las Palmas finished second in a group of teams like Imperial de Murcia, CD Tenerife, and CD Toledo, earning a promotion to the second division for the first time in its history.
The club continued to rise through the ranks of Spanish football. It was promoted to the First Division for the second consecutive season, becoming the first football club to gain two successive promotions to the top flight. Unfortunately, the club’s first season in the First Division ended disappointingly after nine wins, four draws, and 17 losses in 30 matches.
The club’s highest top-flight finish came in the 1968/60 season when it finished second in La Liga. Las Palmas lost the league to Real Madrid, but it was a successful season overall, as the club also had four players represent Spain in the UEFA Euro 1964, which the country won. The second-place finish also led to the club’s first appearance in European competition, playing in the 1969/70 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
The Amarillos have enjoyed more success in the Segunda Division, a competition they’ve won four times, including the latest in the 1999/2000 season. They also finished runners-up in the Copa del Rey in 1978, losing 3-1 to the almighty FC Barcelona.
