FC Porto vs Boavista tickets for the Liga Portugal 2024/2025 season are on sale on Visitfootball.
FC Porto has cemented its place as arguably the main dominant force in Portuguese football. The club was established in 1893 and slowly built its reputation over the next few decades. However, it wasn’t until the late 20th century that the Dragons began to find some consistency in Portuguese football, dominating throughout the 1970s and 80s.
FC Porto started mounting serious challenges to rivals like Sporting CP and SL Benfica in the 1970s before eventually winning its first league title in 19 years in 1978. This victory marked the club’s re-establishment as one of the strongest in the country.
Since then, Porto has remained a regular presence in the Portuguese Liga, becoming a huge force in the country. The club’s dominance gained more power in the 1990s, with the club winning five consecutive league titles from 1994 to 1999, finally establishing itself as one of the biggest clubs in the country. This dominance also extended to the UEFA Champions League, where the club regularly competed.
Porto finally reached the summit of European football in 2004 when the club won the UEFA Champions League. Jose Mourinho guided the club to the title just one season after winning the UEFA Cup. This was also Porto’s first title in the competition since 1987, when the club first won it.
Jose Mourinho made a name for himself with this title in just his third stint as a professional manager. Mourinho went on to further establish himself at Chelsea, where he won consecutive league titles before going to Inter Milan to win his second UEFA Champions League title as a manager.
The club reached the 2004 UCL final, facing French side AS Monaco. The Dragons beat the French giants 3-0 to secure their second UEFA Champions League title. Since then, Porto has continued to assert its dominance in Portuguese football, consistently challenging for top honors in the country.
The Dragons have won the Primeira Liga 30 times, making them the second-most successful club in the competition, only behind SL Benfica. The club has also won 20 Taca de Portugal titles (league cups), one Taca da Liga, 24 Supertaca Candido de Oliveira, and four Campeonato de Portugal, sharing that record with SL Benfica.
Boavista shares a strong rivalry with FC Porto because both clubs are from the same city. However, FC Porto has been more successful in the country than its cross-city rival. Despite Porto’s dominance, Boavista has managed to win nine major domestic trophies, including one league title, five Portuguese Cups, and three domestic Super Cups. The club claimed all these trophies under the presidency of the Loureiro family, either Valentim or Joao Loureiro.
Boavista is only one of the two teams to have won the league title outside the traditional “Big Three,” alongside Belenenses, which is the other one. The club is also the most successful in Portugal apart from the Big Three, which includes FC Porto, SL Benfica, and Sporting CP.

Their first game of last season ended in a 1-1 draw, with FC Porto drawing first blood.
Toni Martinez put the Dragons ahead in the 23rd minute, but Boavista’s Bruno Lourenco put his club back on level terms five minutes later. Ibrahima Camara then received marching orders in the 88th minute, leaving Boavista to finish the game with ten men.
FC Porto enjoyed a late resurgence to come back from a one-goal deficit and win 2-1 in the return leg of this fixture. Bruno Lourenco scored again, putting Boavista ahead in the 60th minute. However, the game changed drastically after Pedro Malheiro was sent off four minutes later. Jose Pedro scored the equalizer in the 81st minute, giving Porto a lifeline. The Dragons continued to push and finally won after Mehdi Taremi scored in the 98th minute.
