Crystal Palace and West Ham United are two of the oldest football clubs in England, having been founded in 1905 and 1895, respectively. They’re both the pride of London, with that region adding more intensity to their rivalry than any other in English football.
For many years, both teams competed in the second tier of English football, known as the First Division at the time. A significant moment in their history was their first meeting in the 1969/70 season when West Ham recorded a 2-1 victory at home. This match marked the beginning of a historic rivalry that continues to this day. Their next three games ended in a stalemate with two goalless draws and one 1-1.
West Ham continued its dominance over Crystal Palace with a 3-0 win in 1971. The Hammers remained unbeaten against Crystal Palace until their English Premier League meeting in 1995, when the Eagles recorded a 1-0 win over West Ham, their first win over the Hammers in over twenty years.
West Ham United’s early dominance over Crystal Palace ended in the ’90s, with the Eagles taking the baton in the 2000s. This shift in dominance adds a dynamic element to their rivalry. They recorded 11 wins against the Hammers in 44 matches in all competitions, and they’ve also recorded 17 draws between them in all competitions.
However, West Ham United has an edge in this rivalry with 16 wins in 44 games. The Hammers have also scored 73 goals while conceding 57, proving how competitive this rivalry is.
Former West Ham United playmaker Manuel Lanzini is the top scorer in this fixture with six goals, followed by Wilfried Zaha, who spent the better part of his career in England at Crystal Palace.
In terms of trophies, West Ham United has a superior record, with three FA Cup titles and two domestic league titles in the second tier of English football. The Hammers also enjoyed some European success in 1965 when they won the European Cup Winners’ Cup and in 2023 when they won the UEFA Europa Conference League, the club’s first trophy in over 30 years.
