The Arsenal vs AFC Bournemouth rivalry is not the most intense in English football, but as recently as their rivalry may have begun, it is more intense than most. Bournemouth is one of the oldest clubs in English football, having been founded 125 years ago in 1899.
The club, initially known as Boscombe, started its journey in regional football leagues before joining the Southern League in 1920. Bournemouth's path was not without its challenges.
The club remained in the Third Division South for over three decades, a testament to its stature and financial situation. However, their perseverance paid off when they eventually won the Third Division South Cup in 1946, marking a significant milestone in the club's history.
After suffering back-to-back relegations in 2008 back into League Two, Bournemouth snapped up former player Eddie Howe to lead the club’s revival. The young Englishman delivered and helped Bournemouth to three promotions in six seasons, becoming a regular fixture in the Championship.
The club gained promotion to the Premier League for the first time in its history in the 2014/15 season after winning the Championship title with a vital win over Charlton Athletic.
Arsenal and Bournemouth played their first top-flight match in December 2015, with Arsenal winning 2-0. Arsenal continued to dominate the Cherries in the Premier League until January 2018, when the Gunners suffered a shock 2-1 defeat away from home.
This was the only time Bournemouth had beaten Arsenal in the Premier League. In all the 15 games they’ve played against each other, Arsenal has a record of 12 wins, while only two games have ended in a draw.
A win against Bournemouth for Arsenal Football Club will boost their title aspirations against Manchester City and Liverpool in 2024.
